Florida snake? Light gray with orange horizontal bands?

jmartin104 Aug 09, 2005 06:05 AM

Snake found in a marshy area. I'm pretty sure it's venomous by the shape of the head and sure it has juvi colors. It was about 12" long. Sorry, I forgot my camera on this trip. Central FL area.

Not enough info for a solid key. Girth would help...thick as a pencil, thick as your thumb? Could easily be a banded or Florida water snake. The attached site has good pictures & a ton of info on all of Florida's venomous snakes. That should help. If it's not on that site, & it is native to Florida, it is not venomous.

About as big around as a grown man's index finger - like the thickness of a highlighter marker. I don't think it was a water snake. I'm going to hit the woods again this weekend. I'll take my camera this time. It looks similar to a Pygmy but had more orange.
