I know that you can't definitely determine the sex of a gila from just a photo but anyone want to take a guess based on the shape of the head and body? I'm still trying to find someone in FL that will do an ultrasound.
Thanks,
Chris

Thats a girl, I bet I am 50% right? She is too young for an ultrasound too I believe? Nice Gila though..

Beautiful animal, from the photo looks female. But until a Heloderm is of sexual maturity it is a guess, educated or not. Many people believe that they can sex animals at yearling size, I for instance guess right more than wrong. But I have recently had a customer send me a photo of an animal laying eggs, that looked male all the way as a baby. As you are able to produce numbers of theese animals you will find you don't know as much as you think you may.

There really isn't any size reference in that photo but she should be sexually mature. She is 3 years old and about 18". Female was my guess as well but it's always easier when you have other gilas to compare and right now this is my only one. I'm probably going to be adding another cinctum to my collection soon and I just wanted to avoid ending up with 2 males.
After I complete my pair and my finances recover I'll be looking hard at your exasperatum. I've been tempted by them for a while

After yrs of sexing Varanids I am anxious to see how I do. Doesnt seem to be alot of differance, but as always young ones can trick you.

I keep looking back at the picture, and I have to go with my first impression that I think it is a male. The animal looks really heavy and that may be distorting the body proportions (thus making the ID more difficult). Like all the rest though, it's just an educated guess.
Beautiful gila by the way.

The other two hit it on the head; it would be simply an educated guess (or perhaps just a sheer guess). But, if I were a bett'n man, which I'm not, I would guess its a male.
