Very Small Frogs

patrisha Aug 09, 2005 02:28 PM

Hi: I am trying to get some information on tiny frogs which I found in a small cement pond on our property. We have two ponds, one has 5 adult and one baby frog in it at the moment and the other has a lot of very small (under 1/2"frogs. These are as small as some of the regular tadpoles, which are also in the same pond. They appear to be fully developed frogs with no signs of a tail. I have water lettuce in the pond and these little progs sit on it but are able to be underwater for a long time. They are light brown in color. We live in a wooded area in Berks County, PA. I hope someone can tell me more about these little frogs. Thanks, Trish

Because they are so small and light brown in color, I would guess that they are most likely juvenile toads, probably Bufo americanus, although B. fowleri might also be found in PA. As you've noticed, toads are not the best swimmers and are generally terrestrial except during the breeding season when adult animals will float around in the water in amplexus. If there is not easy access to land from the pond you might consider trying to move them out of the pond. Good luck,
