Man I have to say I love the pics that you post. Eastern Kings have to be my favorite.I stopped keeping snakes a few years ago,and have taken up another hobby.I wood carve now mostly walking canes and sticks. Most of them having a snake wrapped around it.Which brings me to my question.Your pics the close ups of the head shows great detail.Although my carving are not exact copies of a king snake I like to keep it appearing that way to a non-herper.I have used you pics for reference before, and I have a request would it be possible to get you to take a close up pic of a king showing the head scales and they wrap over the side of the head at and around the eye.
Thanks for your time
Toby

Sort of off-topic, sorry, but I'm dying to know how you keep your snakes still enough to get that close to them without them moving around on you. Or do you zoom in on them WHILE the macro function is in use? If I do that on my Sony 5.1 Cybershot, it's blurry. Not all the time, but if I zoom in too much while in the Macro setting it usually is a little blurry. Anyways, a few tips from you for me would be VERY highly appreciated.

Toby, that's pretty darn good. I had to do a double take and then realized that getula had a wooden head wrapped around that cane, LOL. Love to see some more photos of your work. Thanks for sharing.

Just a few more that I have done.I cant seem to keep any Kings,Scarlets,or Eastern Diamondback. They go as fast as I can carve them.Thank you for the comments hope you enjoy them. These guys are each carve from a piece of wood that starts out 4" in diameter and yes they are one solid piece the snake is not wrapped on the wood. Each scale is indivually done. The eyes I make myself so I can paint them the color that goes with the snake.Anyways heres a few more.

But Im addicted to it now even if I couldnt sell any of them I would still carve them. Its funny each one attaches itself to me.I know wierd but them do.Thanks again for the compliments.

Oh heck ya I want it signed. But its already signed by you I love it. It will be with my family forever.
My wifes dad (father in law) had it for a year in California and showed it off in the neihborhhod the year before he died. He had it for one year. Now it sits proudly above my fireplace mantle.

Wow they look so real. in your first pic you said you stopped keeping snakes and posted that pic. I thought it was an actual snake and said to myself "I guess he kept his favorite snake" lol than after looking at it closely I realized it wasnt real.

TobyEKing Aug 10, 2005 10:00 AM

I would be glad to carve you one.Drop me an e-mail with the one of your choice (what snake) And we can discuss it further.

WOW very nice. Im a bit of an artist myself but Ive never tried wood carving. Do you use a drummel or hand tools ?

Keith

TobyEKing Aug 10, 2005 12:18 AM

Keith,
ALL hand tools wouldnt have it no other way.Just something about it when your done that you cant get from power tools. One thing when using the hand tools you have to use the best. A dull tool will get you hurt.AHEM i learn that the hard way.....lol
Toby
p.s. Keith I would still like to get with you later on and see about a few other shots as well.IF it wouldnt be too much trouble.
