Does an egg sweat before hit hatches?

balloonzforu Aug 10, 2005 07:51 AM

I have had three leos successfully hatch but have not yet seen it happen. I just checked on two that are due to hatch soon, and noticed they are both sweating. I have not added water to their deli cups, the temp has not been changed, and they are both in seperate delis, because one is larger than the other I thought that one would hatch before the other and may turn over the unhatched egg. They were not sweating before I went to bed at 3am almost 6 hours ago. Can anyone tell me if this is a sign they are going to hatch soon? If so I will stand vigil to take picks.

Thank You,
Felicia

Felicia,

Sometimes they sweat and sometimes they dont.... You are lucky to see them hatch.... The eggs will get much softer a few days before they are due to hatch but they do not always sweat...

Mine either hatch in the wee hours of the morning while I am asleep or while I am at work.... Last year I produced aroung 60 babies and never seen on hatch.... This year I saw two hatch but my camera battery was dead.... That sucked....LOL...

Anyway, I am glad you got to see them hatch..... Looking foward to seeing the pics....

Oh boy what a thril to witness them hatching. I got some real good pics of them hatching. They are very small thou, 2.3 grams and 1.9 grams. The smaller ones name is Titan, he's going to need the big name.

Check out their pics at my website.

Very nice indeed! Congratulations. I love your website btw, and taking your incubator 1,000 miles in the car with you is an amazing story. Great stuff.

Though let your son know that while Miami and Hurricane are great names, Floria and Gator would have been better :P (old college rivalries die hard...no, they never die lol)

Thank you! I built my websites for my business couldn't see why I couldn't do it for the Leos too.

The trip to Florida was fun. With the two tanks the incubator and everything needed for the 3.5 week vacation...LOL. All I have to say is thank God for stow and go seats and lots of electical outlets. I did come home one less tank and one less Leo. I gave my goddaughter one for her birthday, while I was there.

P.S. Go Canes!!!! At least you didn't say FSU...LOL!

They're so cute and congrats. I wouldn't worry to much about Titan just because he's small doesn't mean that he won't be huge when he's grown, sometimes the runts end up being the biggest out of them all.

Thank you, I'm trying to keep positive about Titan he just looks so small and so helpless.

Thank you,
Felicia

Congrats on the babies but They are likly small because your females are too small. 26 and 30 grams is really way to young to breed.
They should be at least over 50 grams when bred, I tend to wait till over 60. And I don't see how one could have lost 20 grams from laying one clutch.
I have females on thier 7th clutch that have yet to lose more then 5 grams. I know there are some females that can have egg laying issues, but to me it looks like you bred them way too young. Heck i have 3 month olds that are 30 grams but I sure as hell wouldn't attemt to bred them. I think you are lucky none have become eggbound.

First I would like to say I respect your opinion on this matter and many breeders have their own opinion.

Second I didn't breed my albino she came to me from a breeder pregnant at only 25 grams. That's how I have two Albino hatchlings with no male het for Trepmer Albino.

I also respect Ron Tremper and his reputation, and believe he wouldn't collaborate on The Leopard Gecko Manual with Philippe de Vosjoli if he didn't believe what was in it. On page 40 under breeding it says, "Leopard geckos generally reach sexual maturity at a weight of around 35 grams. Many breeders grow their animals to about 40 grams. before they breed them." My females were all 35-40 grams before they were placed with my male.

Since you read all the fine print of their weight and everything else maybe you should have noticed that I also had to take them on a 1,000 mile trip with me, because no one would be home to feed them. What I didn't post on my site is all three of my females have not only laid a clutch during the 3.5 weeks we were gone and right after we got back, but they decided to get a little stressed out on the trip home and didn't eat for almost two weeks after we got back. Currently neither of my males are in the same tank as the females to give them a break and allow them to put their weight back on.

If the book is wrong then I guess I shouldn't trust these men that have some of the best reputations around the world. That's just my opinion.
