Old herper, new iguana owner

zrho Jul 16, 2003 10:23 PM

Upon bringing our new baby iguana home. My wife tells me (she) is a female. (Her) name is Isabella, Isa for short. She is calm for a juvenile, has a great disposition, and quite a glimmer in her eyes. Hope that she is still with us when we send our one year old son off to college.

You can just spot Isabella in the upper left corner. Dimensions are 48"L, 60"H, 24"D. Using 2 90W floods and a Reptisun 5.0 bulb. Plan on replacing the floods with 2 Powersun mercury vapor bulbs. Enclosure was purchased from ShowcaseCagesLook forward to learning, and sharing.

Finding Isa in her new made me feel like I was doing a 'Where's Waldo' page. Quite a nice set up. And she's a cutie! Good luck & congrats!!

That cage looks great! You may eventually want a bigger one, though, when (s)he gets to be 5-6 ft long. It's really too early to say whether you've got yourself a boy or a girl. By the time s/he is a year and a half old, if it's a boy, he'll have started to show it with the larger jowls, femoral pores, fatty deposits on top of the head, etc. If it's a girl, you won't see those. And of course, if you ever get a glimpse of the hemipenes before then, you know it's a boy. Well, if she turns out to be a boy, you can change the name to Isador, right?

What are you feeding the little guy? Did you adopt him/her or buy from a pet store? If s/he's from a pet store, you should probably bring her to a vet or at least get a fecal exam done and get rid of parasites if necessary.

Hi, welcome to the forum
Im Sarah, and i have one male iguana, Zephyr. hes a little over 3' 3" and i got him in April, given to me by a friend and he has kidney disease & mbd. the cage looks awesome, maybe once Isa has moved to an adult enclosure (im not talking anytime soon, but she will need more room) youll get some smaller lizard/s

what other herps do you have you owned? curious as you say "old herper.."

My previous response timed out - so I lost the post

This is the first juvenile iguana I have ever owned. I acted as a foster home for some abandoned sub-adults in the past, but eventually those animals ended up with other keepers. My interests were, and still are, with varanids, teiids, and water dragons (Physignathus sp.)

Isa was a bit of a compromise. My wife prefers the idea of veggies in the freezer over mice.

The current enclosure should suffice for a year or two. By that time, I hope to have completed a dedicated reptile room. It's already taped out in the basement, just a matter of building, plumbing and wiring it. The room will be 14'L, 9'W, and 7'H.

I have an existing herp vet, and Isa will likely get a checkup and fecal within a week.

Also aware that juvs are not readily sexable. This doesn't much matter to my wife. She assures me that we have a little girl.
Mixed up some Ig salad after getting her home last night (No lettuce to ease any lingering concerns ). Will expand her diet as we move forward.

We hope to have Isa, her/him, for a very long time. Thanks for taking a look and for being interested in her well being.

Regards,

Don M.
