Schneider's behavior

nprifenbark Jul 16, 2003 10:31 PM

I have a schneider's skink and she is the best pet I've ever owned. Now I know they're supposed to be desert lizards and bury themselves all the time, which she does in her cage. When she's out, however, I can't stop her from climbing. She's not very good at it, but she climbs up everything (her favorite being my girlfriend's hair). She loves climbing up and sleeping on top of people's heads, its the most bizarre thing. Just wondering if other schneider's owners have experienced similar behavior.

I have 3 Schneider skinks, and it seems that the males are the most active, and are the ones that enjoy climbing. I provide some pieces of bark, and also a plastic plant fastened to the side. They seem to be good at climbing up, but not at climbing down. Best thing to do is provide them with something in the vivarium at a maximum height of 24". Also provide some soft substrate (such as playsand) at the bottom, so the impact is absorbed if the skink should fall. Do you have a picture of your skink? Sexing Schneiders is very hard, and the obvious things can be very misleading (as i found out the hard way)
