ecoguard_79 Aug 10, 2005 11:56 AM

hi i am looking for help with feeding my just hatching painted turtles.
i had rescued a clutch from a roadway, and now they are hatching, but i dont have experience with turtles, i know i can buty food at the store, but i need to know what their natural diet would be. i am in south western quebec, and i am planning on releasing them to the wild so i dont want them used to eating store bought food
i am not allowed to keep them here, as they are protected.
i have domestic crickets for my gecko colony, woultd they eat crickets?
i just need some hatchling food suggestions.
thanks

Hatchlings would eat basically a carnivorous diet in the wild, small fish, small insects, worms, carrion etc.
When my painted was a hatchling we often had to get live food but chop it up for him because being so small he'd have trouble catching his food.
Good luck with them, good for you for rescuing them!

Feed them feeder fish- might have to injure them so they can't swim fast, plants - I started my baby snapper on romaine lettuce ( also some plants that you can buy at petsmart that are cheap would work, crickets are ok but they will prob be hard for the turtle to catch, and they are not a good source of calcium.
