Baby Crested ignoring babyfood.....

nocturnal36 May 17, 2003 07:02 PM

Hi.....I got a baby crested a week ago, and it doesnt seem to be interested in babyfood or mashed fruit. I tried hand feeding it B.F, but it just backs away... It is eating the crickets though. Is this normal for babies? Will it start gaining interest in the future? THX BTW:im using banana and pineapple BF, and mashed apple and mango…is this OK?

Try using apricot or peach. When trying to hand feed you need to dab some in it's nose to entice it to eat.
good luck

Don’t push the fruit mashes/baby foods on him; give him what he wants to eat. It is very normal for young crested geckos to favor crix and there is a reason for it….they are growing. They need the higher protein diet in order to build the machinery of the body, fruits simply don’t cut it. As he gets older he will gradually enjoy fruit more and more. For now I suggest just feeding him the crix and offering fruit every once in awhile. You could also use the CGD, but I personally prefer crix.

I just got my baby crestie yesterday...I am handfeeding the babyfood mixed with supplements. I dabbed some on my finger and he ran over and started licking it off immediately. I haven't seen him go after the crix, but he sure loved the peach babyfood. he ate until he couldn't eat anymore...I am not relying on the baby food, but if he will eat it, I am happy. He's very healthy and active...and very sweet...likes to sit in my hand for long periods of time...

Tami,
Congrats on the new crested =). He might just need to adjust a bit before he starts feeding on crix. If he doesn’t (which sometimes happens) you have to mix in some meat baby food (find one with the highest protein and lowest fat content) with his fruit. He has to get the protein otherwise he will not grow properly. Fruit is mostly sugar which just fuels the body, does not build structures to use it. You could also use the CGD (auric blend, has more protein content). Keep offering crix though every once in awhile to see if his taste has changed. Once it does you can lean off the others a bit. I feed my rhacs mostly crix with fruit 1-2 times a week.

I found when my cresties were little they weren't interested in the babyfood at all. Now that they are around 6 months old they like it much more. They still chase crickets but also eat the babyfood.
