is it ok to house 2 corns in one vivarium?

mezmerize Aug 10, 2005 03:07 PM

Hey just wondering if its ok to house 2 corns in the same vivarium (obviously not 2 males)? I know some people that house a male and female together year round, and they say that there are no ill efects. I know its not recommended but what are some of the risks/dangers of housing them together?

i myself have had no problems in the past with housing two corns together as long as the viv is large enough. i as you said would never have considered houseing two males, but ive had males and female year round, and two females year round no problem, (as long as feeding is done OUTSIDE the tank.

i know it is frowned upon on these boards, but as long as the snakes are similar sized and fed outside the vivs i have not found any problems, but others on the boards may have had some bad experiances so id wait and see what they say before making and decisions

thanks for the info. One more thing. Is it ok to brumate the corns in the same viv also?

lyly Aug 10, 2005 03:57 PM

i wouldnt. basically because the male gets "into the mood" due to the fact that he has hibernated alone and now needs to search for a female. if the female is there on his doorstep, he might not be as interested.
although i have had friend that have had one male on female in a tank, just as pets, never even brumated them and they still mated and layed 15 viable eggs, so i suppose anything is possible. but i myslef wouldnt, i always keep brumating snakes seperated

I would say it's stupid...

without watching them! They CAN be fed at the same time at different ends of the same enclosure by keeping an eye on them until they are completely finished eating (in other words keep them apart at least by about a foot or so). OR taking one of them out unil the other is finished and then switching them. Other than that, I have kept up to three in a large enclosure and NEVER had a problem (Of course I ALWAYS seperate during feeding time). Some Corns & ratsnakes have been known to brumate together in the winter just like rattlers do)
I have even kept (similar sized pairs) of Kingsnakes together in the past and NEVER lost one. Of course I discourage this, since Kingsnakes ARE snake eaters by nature, Corn snakes are not (they Do eat lizards though).
(25 years of keeping snakes and no problems with cannibalism YET).AMEN!
Bottom line: If you're a novice DO KEEP them in seperate containers until you are more familiar with their eating/feeding habits AND are committed to supervising them while they eat at the same time.

I missed all the posts from the (keeping snakes together clan)when there's problems.
Telling people new to the hobby that its great to put anything together is just asking for problems. There are more cons than pros and you know it.
People can do whatever they want.I will tell them no.
Anyone with enough experience wouldnt ask anyway....Paul

Hi, I have successfully kept my pairs and trios together for the last 13 years. I have never had a problem. Theoretically they could have an issue but I have never seen one. I also keep them in a "hot" room where the temps are fairly consistant over the year. I keep them together year round and have always reproduced for me. In fact, way back in the day I thought they wouldnt reproduce if I kept them this way. I was quite surprised to be presented with eggs one day.

Just my experience.

Carole

PS currently my adult trio is housed in a 36x18 vision cage. All three usually spend all their time under ONE hide box even tho there are 3 of them in there.
