But really, why stay where it is safe? Have you never considered the enhancements to your life that danger brings. Consider for a minute a pile of rocks that I am intimately familiar with...

Sorry, couldn't resist!

jlassiter Aug 10, 2005 08:15 PM

Isn't it fun though!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA

It gets hairy over there sometimes.

RussBates Aug 10, 2005 08:27 PM

his approach is all wrong. While he has good points.....he needs to work on the delivery.

Danger......did I mention I stayed at a Holdiay Inn express last night

...tread quietly...
By the way, I'm in the process of setting up my best "naturalistic" enclosure but I'm having some problems with the wiring of my "hurricane", "drought", and "forest fire" timers...
I figured I better get realistic or my charges will not be happy....
Much better than rubbermaids,huh?

you forgot the hibernation chamber, tsunami, earthquake, and construction/highway expansion options. No snake could feel 100% at home without all of these features inside their rubbermade sweater box. You know they prefer roadkill to F/T or live prey.

I just got home and read through most of that thread. I totally agree.......to much attutide. I'm sorry I got you into that mix by mentioning your name.

Just as a side note I'll bet if you gave your thayeri baby lizards for their first meal they would all eat.

So that would mean that they like rubbermaid boxes with aspen chips and a water bowl?????????????????????????????????????????????

RussBates Aug 11, 2005 06:33 AM

Chris,
You are probably 100% correct on the lizard thing.

As for our good friend FR...don't sweat getting me involved in that thread. I really could give to [bleep]z less what somebody else thinks about my breeding program and husbandry practices. Opinions are like arseholes...everyones got one and all of them stink.

Jeez I was more irritated by his delivery than the content of his post. I've met many a well know herper in our hobby and none of them come across like this guy. Maybe he should go back to his lizard community and remain the lizard king. I just don't have time for that kind of foolishness.

How does the proverb go.....

"Better to keep your mouth shut and let others wonder if you are a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it."

That may be harsh but it just states how I feel about his comments.

No worries..............
More thayeri are expected to hatch this weekend....yippee

Frank is trying to get folks to think "outside the box".

Who cares how that message was delivered, it was a good message!

Take a step back, remove yourself from the "personal" aspect of the thread and messages, and read what he is saying

Even I know Frank personally, and he treats me the same way. He will answer some of my questions with more questions. He has at one time lead me on wild goose chases. What was the point? The point was to make me think for myself, and come up with the answers myself. I'm a better off for it IMO.

Regardless of what many think about FR, you can't argue with his success. If it is the RESULTS that count, listen to what he has to say and see if you can extract the meaningful content. You will be better keepers for it, I guarantee it.

If you get caught up in the personal aspect of it (i.e. the way he comes across when delivering the message) then you have missed a chance to learn something. The day we stop learning, is the day we might as well hang it up.

Just calling it the way I saw it, form outside the box.

If i really wanted people to learn from something I was trying to tell or share with them, I think I could present it in such a way that would motivate them to listen vice offend them and have them tune me out. I hear what you are saying and I can still learn from the content of the post even if I don't like the delivery. You ask who cares...I'd say a good many of us care or it would not have generated the responses it did.

Joe Forks Aug 11, 2005 12:52 PM

That's cool, but FR won't change for you, me, or anyone else.
He is who he is, you don't have to like him, but you can still learn from him.

It doesn't hurt any of us (myself included) to eat a big piece of humble pie. The reason that so many replied to FR's post is because he bruised many an ego with his pointed response. That was my point about removing yourself "personally" from the thread. If "our" egos weren't bruised by his response, you probably could have gotten him to expand on his comments maybe even spell it out for Tom. He did anyway in a round about way.

The only reason I even offered my opinion on it is because I've been on these boards long enough to have seen FR do and get the same thing in the Python Forum, The Monitor forum, etc, time and time again. I used to be the Webmaster of this site.

I've also known Frank personally since 1979 and he's really not a bad guy at all. He doesn't know it all, and he'll be the first to admit that. But he sure has heck has a way with animals, not just kingsnakes, not just pythons, not just monitors, but anything he keeps thrives and breeds.

It's no sweat off my back either way, because I know what to expect from Frank. Frank's not going to sugar coat it for me. He might not even answer my question. But he'll always give me a clue and make me think for myself. I'd have it no other way.

And took the entire thread with him. The question was whether feeding response could be selected for in breeding.

I've had college professors like FR, they really don't want to impart knowledge, maybe because they don't have the answers, I don't know. And I realize he is trying to make us think outside of the box, but sometimes a question merits an answer instead of a dressing down. I'd hate to see a newbie be afraid to ask a question for fear that they will be shredded for their failure to "think".

I really like this side of the forum and probable shouldn't have responded as this will just cause the noise to signal ratio to increase. But it is too late....

Joe Forks Aug 11, 2005 01:37 PM

>>this will just cause the noise to signal ratio to increase. But it is too late....

Not from me sir... I've been in too many internet threads that "went south".

Rational discussion is another matter I'm entirely comfortable with however

I probably stick up for Frank because I know him personally. I also realize he rubs a lot of folks the wrong way. So my posts were in part a meek attempt to help bridge the gap between Frank and the newbie that sticks his neck out.

Frank has a lot to offer. You don't have to kiss his rear end to get something out of him, but it helps not to take his comments "personally". No one likes to hear that their husbandry isn't up to snuff - ouch! - but gosh durn-it, what if he is right?

Best regards and not going south
