4 iguanas huddled together on a small heat rock..

platinumtlc Aug 10, 2005 09:54 PM

Its so sick how some pet stores are.
This new petshop opened up in town and I went in to see what they had. The only reptile they had were 4 iguanas in a 10G tank with the only heat source a small heat rock. And they were all fighting for space on it. What is that about? The person minding the store was like a 13 year old kid who couldn't even catch the crickets I asked for!

What should I do to complain? It broke my heart to see the small iguanas fighting for heat on a heat rock, with no UV lights or even a heat lamp!
I wish some pet store owners were different and they actually knew how to care for things.

Ask how you can contact the store owner/manager.

Take pictures or video shots of this and report it to your local SPCA.

If you are brave enough, and have the money and space, take them all four, and give them for adoption to people who can take good care of them.

But #1 and #2 are the most important ones.

Let us know how this turns out. These scumbags should not be permitted to run such stores.

Make sure you have proof of your complaints, such as video or photos!!! Or else it's your word against theirs.

Good luck!

I find that making a written report and giving it to animal control get better results. Make reference to correct care. Otherwise if you call them, they say they visited and ask what lizard?

i agree with cindy. If you buy them all it seems like a valliant effort, but 1) you dont know what kind of home they will get AFTER adopting them and 2) it will entice the store owner to buy even more iguanas and treat them the same way. I have worked in enough pet stores to know that you CANT save every animal that needs saving (as hard as it is to deal with the fact.). Start small first, and on the inside. Talk to the owner and try to educate first. Tell them that they should be in a much larger enclosure with temp gradients and UVB light. Do it nicely too. Being angry and using an agressive approach wont accomplish much. Believe me...i speak from experience.

Maybe before we make accusations calling these people "scumbags", you should ask for a little more detail. Is this a fish store with iguanas? I agree that those types of stores should not be permitted to sell reptiles, but lets not jump to conclusions of neglect. Maybe you should write an anonymous letter to the store and suggest some better techniques on keeping baby iguanas. This is why i think they shouldn't have reptiles, but some pet store owners don't even know what a UV light is or understand it's purpose. Try to educate them before you condemn them!
