Artificial Silk Worm food v.s Mulberry Leaves

chameleoncrow Jul 16, 2003 11:33 PM

There been a lot of silkworms talks lately, and here i am to add more! Well, this time is more about their food. I know that Natural way is probabaly the best, but how much more inferior is artificial food compared to real mulberry leaves? Or is it nutritionally inferior at all? Or is artificial food more nutritious due to maybe extra ingredients and vitamins included in the mix. Does anybody know the nutritional content of artificial food, or wheter it is nutritionaly better than real leaves?

Hi-

Well the real thing is always better, but the chow is a great replacement for the leafs. I have used both and had the same results with both. Hope this helps!

I'm pretty sure that both are great for herps. I don't know if one is better than the other.
If you are raising silkies for thier silk, than diet is more of an issue. Silkies raised on leaves alone have much fuller cocoons, and those raised on artificial foods don't always have that great of cocoons. They are good enough to get the job done, but you would need a lot more to get your silk.
