Sexual maturity and other breeeding ???'s

Chris61988kb Aug 11, 2005 08:58 AM

How long does it take on average for a male and a female GTP to reach sexual maturity?

How many eggs on average will you get in a cluth?

How many clutchs will a female lay in on year? what times of the year?

Are GTP's hard to breed?

Do you introduce them into the same cage just for a short period of time to mate like you do with ball pythons?

thanks, Chris

- Males 2 years (avarage) Females 4-6 (1,000grams)

How many eggs on average will you get in a cluth?
- I think the record was 40 (not all were fertile) I belive avrage is around 10 - 12 (mind you, it's very common to loose eggs during incubation and for chondros do die after they pip)

- 1 time a year and its recomended to give them at least a year off after they breed. Some females have been bred year after year but this dramaticly cuts their life span. Females usualy have a set number of clutches they can bare before you would want to retire them. I'm unsure what this number is but i estimate around 5-6 clutches. You can breed year round as long as you can meet their cooling needs.

It's pretty easy to get them to copulate. But theres a reason why you only see a very few clutches of CBB chondros each year.

- You might want to pick up Greg Maxwells book "the complete chondro" he talks about this in great detail. The long and short of it is, it's about a 10 - 12 month process given everything goes right.

- Sounds like you're looking to start breeding chondros. My advice to you is, dont get in to these animals with the intent of breeding alone. It can be pretty fustrating, but it's very very rewarding if done correctly. If you're doing it for the money it's going to take you some time before you even break even. I'm estimating I spent about 25k on my collection over the years and I'm just now starting to get some of that back (the key word is SOME). I don't expect to break even for a long time. I think the pinicle of chondro breeding having a collection that pays for its self. A lucky few can do this, and a smaller lucky few earn profit.

Hope this helps.

Gotta say Julien, I think that picture is the bomb! I saw it over on the other forum too, but it reminds me of the picture of the human baby in it's dad's hands. That's you....just with a chondro!

The pic is cool, but i think the experience was unforgetable especially the first time around. That was a kodak moment. Someday though. Thanks, Clint

Yes I think the GTP is by far one of the most cool lookin snakes out there. And no im not trying or going to try to breed them any time soon, You say breed them for the money, now if i was looking for some good money out of breeding snakes, Id pick my self up 1.1 100% het albino balls and 1.1 100% het pied balls. And I am planning on doing this when spring starts.

Im just trying to cover the basics topics of facts you need to know about the chondro and breeding was the one topic i didnt know about.
