How often need to feed a baby snake? No fang affect the eating?

leening Aug 11, 2005 11:11 AM

Well..i got the baby common house snake.(born not more than a month i guess)

HOw often do i need to feed it with lizard?

A day before yesterday,I fed a baby lizard to it.It bite the prey straight away. But it got problem swallowing the prey..it twist and turn like dancing tried to pushed the prey in..(at tht moment i kinda hope it got hands)after few attepmts..still failed..then fed up to the teeth...so in the end.i use my dissecting set to cut the lizard apart..first tail & handfeed it.was not easy for it to swallow it but in the end succeed.but the leg part kinda hard fot it.I saw it twist and turn again to pushed it in.It got fed up again..so i need to swing the prey in front of it to make it try again..after few seconds or minutes it got aggressive and strike at the prey again..so i think in teh end it ate the tail and legs.

next day the half of the prey's body missing..i dunno it ate it or not but quite relieve to saw it can tore the prey apart finally. And from time to time i saw the left over end up at dirrent spot..so i guess it had a hard time eat the head part..(the lizard just slightly bigger than the snake(not more than0.3cm bigger than it(the width) and if im not mistaken, the lizard born not more than 2weeks)

it doesnt swallow,i thought snake dont tear the prey like how lion eat instead they swallow?it dont even encircle the prey.I wonder was it because no fang so it got problem eating?

But now quite relieve cuz it eat although it got problem swallow whole part..

I dont see why you are feeding it lizards... first off they arent very healthy food supliment.... second you are feeding it another reptile... i mean if your going to feed it a [bleep]ty diet you mine as well give it a minnow... go to the pet store..get some guppies and w.e they are like 10 cents a piece and they go down a whole lot easier than a lizard... if you feeding it a decent size anole... then screw the minnows.. screw the anole... give it a pinkie... probally the healthiest diet you can give it for that size of a snake.

I checked from internet found out it eat lizard.this kind of snake will search around household area for lizard.Thats what i found out.I got suggestion from the people here also says feed it lizard or cricket,mealworm,etc.Well..mealworm,i tried, failed.SPider, tried, failed too.But lizard it strike straight away..i guess lizard was right for it since it wont eat if is not it's food source.
So..lizard or not? What if it wont touch minnow or guppy? Then what to feed?

anyway..i also think the minnow is a good idea for it to swallow..but i dunno whether it eat or not.Now is not the breeding season,so very hard to find minnow..plus the haze situation here..
normally what people do to the guppy? They use it to feed what type of animal?Frankly speking..i may see a guppy before but I'll never pay notice to the name..so basically I don't know what fish you talking bout...if you tell me what people use to feed it to then will be easier for me to check it out.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Try newborn mice or "pinkies" the smaller the better, if the snake wont eat them right away clean them with a little water dry them and put them in a small box with a lizard or two, you can use a dead lizardor a live one. leave the mice in the box 1 hour or so, or if you use a dead lizard you can rub it on the mouse. the point is, you want the mouse to smell like a lizard and then the snake will usually eat it. after a couple of feeding you can try the mouse unscented, usually the snake will continue to eat them once it knows they are food. Your house snake doesn't have fangs and never did just rows of very small teeth. also It has been a while so I might be wrong, but I dont think they are constrictors either, they just grab, hold and swallow prey, this means that the eat proportionaly smaller animals than other snakes their size so don't try anything too big. Hope this helps.

Thanks!
But i dont think it will eat the newborn mouse.Anyway..yesterday i gave the lizard's tail to the snake, and i went to checked just now and the tail was gone,so i guess is in the snake's stomach already. ^_^

Just one thing i don't know is that how often i need to feed it and dont know how long it will take to digest the food so i can know when can handle it to avoid it vomit what it eat.
