scenting pinks for a vine snake?

chris61988kb Aug 11, 2005 11:15 AM

Ok I know that your sapossed to feed your vine snake anoles... personally i dont beleave in feeding a reptile another reptile. So i know some people scent pinks/mice/rats which other scents for their snakes.... you think i could just grab an anole and scent pinks with it and the vine snake would actualy eat the pinks?

some of them actually eat pinks. try an unscented first and see what happens. if not scented should work.

Do you know any trust worthy vine snake breeders.... because i dont want to screw myself over when its not eating pinks ya kno... so ill just have a trust worthy breader try it out for me... if it works... do it a couple times to get it used to the pinks and then ill buy it.

Chris, although you may not believe in feeding reptiles to reptiles, it's what they do in nature. I had a pair of prasina's that would only eat live anoles, they have quite an appetite and are by the most expensive feeders I have ever had. It's quite a task getting vine snakes to switch over, it can be done, but with a ton of patience. Scenting is the best way to get them to do so. As far as trust worthy dealers go, any will tell you that they feed on mice (unless they are honest, but we know how that goes), so you're taking a 50-50 chance. I had a dealer tell me that the hognose he sold me was readily taking pinks, but would only take dead lizards. Luckily I had some anoles and day geckos in the freezer to get it started. Needless to say, I had a hell of a time getting it to take pinks, but it did, although it shouldn't have been that much of a task.
Good luck.
