New dragon coming!

bps516 Aug 11, 2005 11:21 AM

I think we are breaking most every rule with this but oh well. My wife works at a PetStore chain and for the past two months they have had a beardie that came in with a group and is the last one left from it. Since we had a beardie before my wife kind of latched onto him and takes him out of the enclosure when she can since she noticed he was starting to hiss at her (actually at everyone) everytime that she reached in to clean out his cage. After some debate we have agreed that he needs a new home badly. And in my wife's kind (spiteful) way she decided if he is going to hiss at her and nip at her everytime he sees her, well she is going to give him as much of an oppertunity to do it as she can. We set up the enclosure at home and he is getting run through the vet to make sure everything is ok to bring him home. We recently rescued a mountain horned dragon and got her back up to health and its temperment has turned around completely. Hopefully in a couple of weeks we will be able to say the same about the beardie! Our first beardie was wonderful and died way too soon from an RI that our vet thought he was treating correctly (we now have a different vet for our herps!). I'll post a picture and update as soon as he is set up in his new home!

congrats on the new baby! And i wouldnt say you are breaking any rules or anything...it seems like you have some experience, and a good head on your sholders (since you are taking the little guy straight to the vet) as long as you know what you are doing and give him lots of TLC im sure he will turn around and become a sweetheart!

It's ok. When I worked at an evil chain store, I had a similar thing happen to me. It wasn't Petco, so you can probably guess which one it was. I left that store, because no one knew jack about proper reptile care and I got sick of my advice falling on deaf ears. It's all about the $$$ to them, of course!
Anyway, the one good thing that came out of that was getting Gordo. He's now 2 and a half, 20 in. and over 560 grams...not too bad, for a Petsmart beardie. There...I said it, lol.
I wish you and your wife much luck with your new dragon. Please keep everyone updated!

Thanks to you both! My wife is very fortunate to work at an unnamed PetStore chain that, at least in her store, has people that actually know about reptiles (my wife worked with an unnamed zoo in atlanta prior in the education department and took her knowledge from there). We brought the beardie home last night and he of hissed at both of us anytime we walked my. My younger son who is 10, on the other hand, reached right in and picked him up and there was not a hiss or a nip. It climbed up on his shoulder and relaxed. Glad it took to him since he is going to be the designated (and supervised) care giver! I will post some pictures tonight when I get home.
