anyoine know where i could find a recipe for geliton for crickets? for the past 3 weeks i have had them in an aquarium on the dinner table and my wife told me i have till sat. to move them. so i am moving them out on the back porch.

Use Agar if you can!
If I remember correctly, it's a completely organic by-product, produced in the harvesting and processing of Sea Kelp, a 100% renewable natural resource.
However, if you cannot obtain agar agar, you could also create your own 'cricket water' using polymer crystals; 2 Tablespoons will absorb about one gallon of water.
If you're having trouble locating the crystals, contact me and I'll get you some.

there are three thiongs about agar.
1. not all agar is made of kelp ib elieve some is made of sheep and pig by-products.
2. it is made for grtowing micro-organisms in labs so it get mold easily.
3. (the main reason i don't use agar) IT SMELLS NASTY.
agar is fine to use but there are just more pleasant things you can use. JK

I say spend the $4 and buy the gelatin stuff at your local pet store. I have kept approximately 3000 crickets over the past two and half months and have yet to run out of my first jar of the gel stuff (it's finally about to run out). Anyway, I have an incredibly low death rate of crickets (less than 2 per week at this point) and would say that $4 for a jar that has lasted me two months is a good deal.

I buy my crystals by the pound, at about $6.00 per pound. You need about one ounce, or 2 tablespoons to make a gallon of the stuff. My cost for making a gallon of 'cricket water': $.38 plus some tap water.
Yes, $4 isn't much, but it all adds up. If you can find a way to spend less than 10% (that's assuming that you're spending $4 on a whole gallon of 'cricket water', but I think you're buying a lot less at this price!)of your total cost of a supply, I'd think it would be worth looking into.

Agar Agar IS the seaweed extract. Agar, as in petri dishes, can be made from other sources, but the name is from Agar, the seaweed extract...ever wonder why a Mcshake or frosty is STILL thick after it melts?????? I believe it's the same stuff they use a drool in the Alien movies....
The stuff I use does not stink, at all, but it IS the base for petri dishes, so I wouldn't keep it out of the refrigerator.
