Selling a kingsnake... questions questions!

ElusiveKimmaby Aug 11, 2005 02:42 PM

Alright, we've hit a problem. A friend of mine got herself a california king female who's going off to college and they've just slapped her with the no pets rule. She's got to get rid of it by the end of this month. She's about 3 ft long or so, albino and all that, very pretty. She's a little bit nervous and not an easy feeder. We're not sure why, she was just peachy at the pet store, but when she took the snake home it became jumpy and nervous and fickle about eating, even though she handles it frequently! How much is this snake going to be worth? I'm going to attempt to sell her at a local reptile show.
I think the reason she's a nut is my friend plays music in her room all the time. I don't think she knew (until today when I told her) that that can cause a LOT of stress. I figured that could drive her nuts, so we're experimenting with that now.
Anyhow, back to the main question. What is a reasonable price to ask for this snake? I want to sell her tank too, which is a 20 gallon long waterproof, but I figure I could just keep that if no one wants it since I have my own critters. She paid $120 for her at the petstore, but knowing them, that price is a big fat ripoff and I doubt we'll get what she paid.

well though i am not in the position to buy another snake, i would like to clear a couple things up for you and mabye help you.

1. snakes only sense movement in the ground, what they can taste with their tongue, and warmth, you could scream at a snake till you are horse and chances are the snake wouldnt even bother since s/he and all snakes can not here noises we make.

2. for a price, my 20long was $60 roughly, new, so you can call it $45-$50 and im sure you will be able to sell it. also, the price of the snake, well thats big you do not want to get ripped off like i think you were in the pet store. if i was to buy that snake i would say tops would be $100 and i would suggest 80 even depending on how faint and define the markings are. but the price is all up to you and how much you think she or he is worth including its health condition, which can change the price a lot...

Snakes sense movement though vibration and sight. If a radio is played loud enough (especially if it has good sub woofers!) it can most assuredly stress a snake out. The constant vibrations would be equivalent to someone running power equipment right outside your bedroom. How restful can that possibly be?? If a human can feel the vibrations of good bass, imagine how much more a snake can feel it. There is much more to music than just sound!!

Another issue... you say she's not a good feeder 'even though' your friend handles her a lot. If a snake is not eating well, do NOT handle it any more than is absolutely required. Handling a stressed snake will simply served to increase its stress level.

Considering the snake tank was on a desk and I'm pretty sure the speakers were awfully close, I figured it was the vibes. I know how this works.
Anyway, her markings are very clear! She's pink with yellow stripes, very very obvious, clear, defined stripes. I'll tell her to bring the handling to a minimum. I'm just worried that if the handling is eliminated then she will regress? I have that problem with my corn from time to time. When things around the house get really busy, and I haven't handled her more than once a week just to feed a mouse, she starts getting jumpy and not wanting me to touch her. Right now I can't even catch her because she either acts like she's going to strike or goes WEEEEE RUN AWAAAAAY! Augh... I need a snake trainer lol.

I told her she was ripped off. That particular pet store is reputable for their knowledge, but not in a positive manner for their PRICES! My female albino corn I purchased there was only a little under a foot, and she was $100. Boy did I feel stupid when I went to my first reptile show and saw how much they were selling ones just like her for! I guess I'll try to get $60 for her, considering how jumpy and stressed out she is. We'll see if she calms down when she comes to my house and gets a vacation from all the activity.
