Confused on the "Lavender" Albino trait...

snmreptiles Aug 11, 2005 03:41 PM

I need to know if the albino and lavender albino traits are the same...Are lavender albinos just really nice albinos?! I see "het for lavender albinos" but If bred to a "normal" albino am I gonna get half albinos, half hets? Or would they all be normals 100% het albino, 50% het for lavender albino? Is this just a "Line bred" form of albino such as the "Sunglow" trait in corn snakes?

Thanks,
MIKE

The Albino, Lavendar Albino, and Caramel Albino are different genetic traits. The result of crossing an Albino with a Lavendar Albino would be Double Heterozygous offspring.

Personally, I don't really care for the Lavendar or Caramel Albinos. IMNSHO, nothing beats a nice high contrast Albino...

...except maybe a Piebald.

I'm still not so sure, do you have a link to where this can be confirmed...I understand completely T positive and T negative forms of albino are different...but I don't see that big of a difference in the lavs, and the normal albinos! Granted I haven't seen them side by side in person. I would like to hear from a person that has personally bred a lav. albino, to a "regular" albino, and got normal looking (HETS) offspring!!

It is rather hard to capture in a photograph the lavendar color of a snake. If you were able to see them in person, side by side, you would see a definite difference.

For example: Here's my lavendar albino retic. Looks like a white phase, but it isn't. That's just how lavendar albinos and cameras work unfortunately. Unless you're one of those "gifted" photographers-which I'm not

All these are Ralph's animals:

Top: High Contrast "normal" albino - this was an extremely nice specimin - I sent through his collection to find one I really liked.

Lower Left: Adult Lavender. This picture really does not do justice to the purple you see in this snake - If I used a flash it washed them all out, if I didn't use one, the lavender came out dull.

Lower right: Unproven "Granite Albino"

You can go to Ralph's site to see comparison pics of baby lavs. vs. regular albinos.

Hope this helps!

I don't think anyone has hatched eggs yet from crossing Lavender and regular albino (RDR got some clutches of bad eggs, at least one of the breedings involved a het) or from Caramel X regular albino. If someone has I'd love to know about the results. The assumption that they would produce normal looking double hets is probably the best bet but I think it's still just a guess.

RDR did cross Lavender and Caramel and produce normal looking animals this year.

I've heard a report that a clutch of regular albino X lavender albino has hatched and are all normal looking. So that leaves only caramel X regular albino ...
