Feeding dry CGD

lzrdldy530 Aug 11, 2005 05:19 PM

I know this has come up before, but do any of you feed the CGD dry regularly and successfully meaning without inhalation/choking deaths resulting? I'm having a real problem keeping the mixed cgd from molding inside of 24 hours. I know in winter with dryer/cooler air this will abate, but I'm (my cresties are) wasting a lot of food currently.

you know the mashed potato mixes you buy at the grocery store that you add water too for instant mashed potatos, thats what i would compare it to, us eating just the dry mixture with nothing else added.

i have heard it works, and there is a couple people that do it, and thats cool if it works i just dont see how the animals could eat it very easily, it seems like it could be a possible choking hazard.

Some people feed the cgd dry, but I don't see how it can possibly taste good. Imagine if you were only ever given powder to eat. Yuck! It can be done (and some people have had success with it), but be sure to give your crestie plenty of water to wash the dust out of their mouth. I prefer to feed crix and smoothie-like foods... but to each their own.

Things that make you go hmmmm?? I mix the stuff and my geckos like it. Is there waste? Yes, more in the warm months when mold starts almost instantly. But the stuff is CHEAP. IMAO there would just as much waste serving the stuff dry if not more.I invision- It would be negativly affected by misting or any contact with moisture that did not dissolve the powder. would probably make the stuff unedible. If you are feeding it dry you must maintain clean water a dish that your gecko will run through and poop in before they walk through the powder. The powder spills just as easy as the mix. Because of the difference in volume wasting 1 gram of powder = 3grams of the mix. When I combined that with the potential inhalation and dehydratin problems. I am thinking I will keep making the shake and using my condiment squeeze bottle and checking my geckos every day. sorry about all the typing just what I think.

A condiment squeeze bottle? Now why didn't I think of that!! I've been mixing it on several dozen individual plates, adults 1 night, juvies/babies the next. If I only put a dab, it dries out too fast and if too much, it gets fuzzy. I actually TRIED to put some dry CGD powder in an enclosure last night, but I couldn't do it!! Thank you all for your feedback!

. . . Don't make so much mix. No one said you have to fill a 2 oz deli with CGD. Just put a bit in there - and take it out the next day. If they don't get any - they will be hungry the next feeding time and will ready to eat the next time.

I currently have 20 crested and even more babies. 1 35 dollar can lasts me several months - I feed every other day. They are ready to eat when I feed them. It doesn't last long, and they are growing like weeds.

Just keep cutting back until you see that most of it is gone from their feeder after the night. Then you won't have to worry about it. I fed the gang last night - and I saw that most of them had it all easten/drank.

Besides - the food is cheap - cheaper than all that other yogurt/baby food and crix crap. And I'm not sure how good it would be to feed it dry.

I leave the CGD dry in there. I use also a new dry that you can mix like CGD also.

Yup, I have been feeding it dry for going on three years now. Occasionally I will throw in some fruit smoothie type concoction and they prefer the dry diet over the smoothies. In fact, I have seen them stand in the smoothie to get to the dry diet.

I put in in the tiniest size tupperware and cut a hole in the size for them to put their heads through to prevent the misting problem. I leave it in there all the time- their dishes are never empty, either food or water. However, many of the "pros" recommend providing water out of a dish instead of misting as to reduce fecal matter consumption. I havent misted in about five months and have had no shed problems whatsoever. I currently have over 50 Cresteds, great production and lots of healthy babies. As a Veterinary student with over 20 cages I need to save myself all the time that I can, so skipping scraping dried on gecko food off dishes every day is a big plus.

They eat it off their little plates with no problem whatsoever, it sticks to their tongues. Think of it less like a person eating mashed potatoes and more like a dog eating dry kibble.

To each their own, but it can be done!

Genevieve
