New snake: any tips?

Purplemonkey Aug 11, 2005 11:53 PM

Hello. I'm going to be getting an Irian Jaya Carpet Python at the All-Maryland Reptile show this coming weekend. I've researched this python for a while, but can anyone give me any sort of good tips that might come in useful? Any kind of tips I can get from people with carpet python experience would be wonderful.

Thanks.

hi,

Irian Jaya Carpet Python is a subspecies of carpet python. these pythons are active in the night during summer season and active in day during winter season. so it is comfortable to human habitations. it is docile python, eats small animals and birds and defecate lot. we have to provide fresh water in big bowl for all the times because python loves to soak in water and it has a habit of defecating in the water. we should always disinfect the water bowl.
iam also owning a carpet python.
i recently came across a site www.pythonsecrets.com. they send me free newsletter giving lots of tips.

have a nice day

When it comes to carpet pythons I find it best to buy them as juveniles. They may start off fairly snappy, but with gentle handling they tend to calm down. Just beware that as it gets older it can become aggressive. From my experience with them some of them are perfectly tame their entire lives and some will snap at their entire lives. Good luck with your purchase.

Thank you for responding! I eventually did get a baby. I've been bitten once, and that was when the breeder handed her to me. (*snap* "I'll take her!" As it turns out, she has a nasty RI and some parasites, which I'm working on taking care of. But she's been a complete darling, except for that first day. She is very tame, and seems to almost enjoy handling.
