Help, major tissue damage

gooner Aug 12, 2005 03:43 AM

As you can see from the photo it is through to the bone on the top of her head. I have no idea what could've caused this and none of my other snakes are showing any signs.
I couldn't see any signs of mites but I treated her yesterday to be on the safe side.
I have only had this snake for a relatively sort time, around a month or so, and I've always thought there wasn't something quite right with that area of the head. I passed it off to be just the way her patterning was though as it just looked like a lighter patch.

Do you know what could've caused this and what I can do now?

Thanks in advance

looks like a rip / tear /cut to me.and looks like it's healing along the edges...

it will shed out.......take a few sheds........

figure out what cut it

cage metal or plastic ,log/wood,,rat bite,,figure it out so it won't happen again.....

My big female has similar looking marks on her head. Nowhere near that deep, but she scratches herself when she hides under her water dish. I use those big $1 plastic dog bowls at Wal-Mart. I know that doesn't help you cure her but just an idea to check on what could have caused it.

I had it happen in the past..........when i kept them in rubbermaid containers.........when they try to push their way out of the container........the corners have plastic ribs on the lids thet they basically just carve their heads out with....in the same identical place......I had it happen to varying degrees with almost every animal kept in those enclosures ( about 7 snakes at the time..........once i noticed it i removed them from the tubs and set them up in a rack system.........problem solved..........the cuts will heal............treat with hydrogen peroxide once...........let dry.........and sterilize with Povodine Iodine...........i dont like to use neosporin as it will just get all nasty as the snake goes thru its daily routine.......

Get em out of the plastic container....

Thanks for your responses everyone. I will take her out of the tub tomorrrow once I have built a viv for her. She is currently kept in a basic setup, just newspaper and a plastic dog bowl, so could've been the bowl or the tub itself.

Thanks again for your help
