Pics of my new Black Rats (Normal, Rusty, and Orange Albino)

Lyn Aug 12, 2005 12:53 PM

I went to the show in Hamburg PA last weekend hoping to find some animals to add to my demo group, specifically a Black Rat for my "Native to NY" group. I found a vendor who not only had "normal" black rats, but also some very interesting reddish brown ones labeled "Rusty" and various colors of Albino. He had a Purple Albino which was really Purple. Very neat. I picked out a male "Normal" one (poss het Leucistic and/or Licorice Stick), a pair of "Rusty" ones (also poss het Leucistic and/or Licorice Stick), and a female Orange Albino (for sure het Licorice Stick). I didn't intend to get more than just a plain old Black Rat, but I was very intrigued by the Rusty's, I'd never heard of "Brown" Black Rats before. And the Albino was very sweet and pretty so she just had to come home too. You know how it goes at the shows. I almost bought a Mandarin Rat but was told they need cool temps and I don't have central air so it didn't seem I could properly care for it. I was bummed. I did get two Chinese Dog Faced Water Snakes which are mostly aquatic and eat only fish. I set them up in a 55 gallon tank 3/4 filled with water and then driftwood so they can get out to bask. They are really neat. Total splurge there. I'm very happy with the Black Rat snakes, all ate f/t for me already. The albino is a year old, was a runt and had a slow start, so is still small, the other 3 are only a month old. Very energetic. Will have to work on getting them used to being held. I'll post pics as they grow. Does anyone else here have Rusty's? Mine have patternless bellies which I thought was neat.

Here are some photos of them in the deli cups, they are set up in plastic "shoeboxs" now with Aspen. Will get 40 breeder tanks as soon as they are big enough, and not sure what they will get when they outgrow that. Probably something home made.

"Ravenclaw" (the Normal one)

This is the Rusty Male, no name yet

This is the Rusty Female, no name yet

This is the Orange Albino Female, no name yet

It's hard to get photos of the Water Snakes. I've named them Nessie and Hufflepuff. This is Nessie...

Thanks for looking at my photos! I'd love to see pics of other peoples Black Rats, normal phased or other colors! And I'd love to see your setups for adults so I can get some ideas going ahead of time.

Sounds like you got your rats snakes from Mike Jolliff.
I was at the show also and saw those water snakes.Interesting.
Good luck with all of them. Here's a pic of my w/c black rat.

Lyn Aug 13, 2005 08:31 AM

You are correct, they are Jolliff's snakes. Yours is beautiful! What do you house him in at that size? The Waters were intriguing. I saw many people stoop down to look at them. I was glad they were still there when I finally broke down and decided to buy them. I am going to a bait shop tomorrow in hopes of finding something good to feed them. They won't take guppies or rosies, only goldfish. I was told goldfish are not good as a sole food, so I'm hoping to find some minnows or something else to feed to them. Thanks for sharing your photo!

I keep him in a custom made inclosure that a friend had made for his boa. When he sold his snake,he gave me the inclosure. Will post a pic of it soon.
By the way,my snake is Lycoming co. Pa. locality and we have had him for 5 years now.He is very calm and many neices and nephews have had the pleasure of holding him.

Lyn Aug 15, 2005 07:20 AM

Thanks. It's good to hear that they can become calm enough even for kids to handle. I will continue working with mine while young in hopes they will be calm as adults. Actually, I worked with them alot over the weekend and the Normal one is very mellow. The Albino one seems good. The male Rusty was funny in the beginning, musked a bit, but did calm down, and when I picked him up last night he was very good, just the female Rusty is still skittish. She's in shed now so I'll leave her be for a while. I figure I'll have to build some home made enclosures down the road for these guys. Do they prefer a tall one for climbing or a long one for stretching out?

Some Black Rats are dark brown in color, but that is rare in my area. I caught one years ago outside Richmond Va. In all honesty, at the time, I thought it was not as attractive as the jet black ones that I was finding. Today, people pay extra for strange colored snakes. How times have changed.

I will try to post a few of my Black Rats for you. Mine are all normal coloring, but I have Black Rats from Va., N.C., and Pa. I will take some photos tonight.

Thanks for the post. Enjoy all your new snakes.

Rick

Lyn Aug 13, 2005 09:41 AM

I look forward to seeing your photos, especially the one from PA since that's probably closest in coloration to what would be found in NY. I've never seen one in the wild, we don't have any in my immediate neck of the woods. Time will tell what the Rusty's will look like as adults. They have patternless bellies and I'm hoping the coloration and bellies are indications that they are indeed het for Leucistic. I won't know for many years though.

Hi Jimmy! How are you doing? I'm glad to see that people seem to be able to handle their Black Rats pretty easily. Mine are very fast and whippy right now, but haven't bitten or musked. I'm guessing I should work with them as much as possible between meals. My adult Everglades/Yellow does not like to be handled, I got him as an adult and he had not been handled much by the people who had him most of his life. It's no big deal on a 4 foot snake who I don't use for breeding or demos. He lives a good life and is happy. But I want to use my Normal Black Rat for demos, and I want to breed the other 3, so I need them to be managable when they grow up. Have you had yours since hatchling size? Were they easy to get calm about being handled?

Hey Lyn,
The black rat I am holding is a wild caught. I caught him earlier this summer while fishing.
He is pretty calm considering. He still gets a little jumpy when I first reach into the tank but once I get him out he calms down nicely.
A captive bred black rat should calm down nicely if handled on a regular basis.

Oh Wow, if you can handle a WC like that then I definitely should not have a problem starting with hatchlings. The "normal" Black Rat watched Croc Hunter with me today. He's very calm. He'll make a great demo snake. He was hard to hold when I first got him home but he'd been stuck in a deli cup all day. Thanks for the encouragement and for sharing the pictures!

Nice looking snakes you picked up!
Here are some of mine:

This is a KY locale male... He is a behemoth at well over 6'. I need to get an updated pic of me holding him. This is typical of the obsoletus here in KY.

This my MO locale male....

And my MO locale female, both from the same locale....

This is my albino black rat from Dwight Good. He is quickly catching up to my KY black rat in size!!! Im hoping he will be a monster as well. This guy just keeps getting better and better looking with age!

and another pic of him....

Hope you enjoyed
Brian

Wow, that Albino is breathtaking!!! Mine has more white so won't grow up to look that bright. If I do get seriously into breeding these I will have to get my hands on some of that stock. That is just one drop dead gorgeous animal.

I heard some localities keep more green/yellow and some turn more black. I can see that in your photos. I wonder why the snakes developed different colors in different areas. If it just "happened" or if those colors benefit them more/less in different areas.

Thanks Lyn
The albino is Dwight Good stock and was actually one he was going to hold back for a breeding project. But, as luck would have it, I was able to pick it up from him. His oranges have gotten better with age, instead of the usual fade. So that is a great plus! However, Dwight is planning on using him in the future for a breeding project, so you might be able to get one of the offspring.

As far as coloration goes with the black rats, it is my hypothesis that the black rats in the southern range that retain more of the grays, yellows, and browns, are more than likely an intergrade of black X gray rats. For instance here in KY, the gray and black rat ranges overlap, and the black rats here are not jet black and retain much coloration and pattern. Now you get farther north into IN, IL, MO etc. and the black rats are of the jet black coloration. In MO where I grew up, the yearlings attain black quickly and lose their patterns. Both of my MO black rats came from NW MO, and have virtually lost their patterns and are jet black. You can still see a faint pattern on them in the sunshine or camera flash, but they are black. One thing that is interesting, most of the black rats that I have came across in MO have lots of red in their skin between the scales on their sides. And some even have nice reds replacing the white on the bellies so they have a red/black checker pattern. Im hoping to breed my MO pair next spring and hopefully Ill have some babies. The black rats in that locale have lots of reds on them, so this pair should produce some nice looking animals.

Oh, that's interesting. There are no Gray Rats in NY which might explain why ours are more Black and lose much of their pattern.

I see you have some Eastern/Red crosses. Were they WC or was it a planned breeding? Would those be considered Coastal Plains? I have 5 Eastern Milks, I saw a Red Milk at the show and it was tempting. You don't see them much.

All 5 of my Easterns were hatched in captivity. Three were from a wild caught mother who laid eggs just days after being rescued (she was injured and dropped off at a local animal hospital). The other two were captive bred from NJ locale parents.

There seems to be debate as to whether I can legally breed/sell Easterns in NY. Until I find out for sure I will not attempt it. Some people say no because even though mine aren't WC, they are a locally native species. Some say yes. I haven't found a copy of any law that says one way or another. I'm not sure about the Black Rats either since I'm guessing whatever laws cover Eastern Milks would also cover Black Rats. I will be crushed if I find out I cannot breed the Black Rats.

They are W/C from the same location. There is a huge color variability with these intergrades and no two are the same. Its pretty cool. Here are pics of them..
This one has more of an eastern look to it, but has a slight reddish tint...

And this one has alot of red, and the background is more of a silvery-gray.....

As far as breeding and selling native snakes, maybe you will get lucky and the laws are like here in KY. We cannot sell W/C native snakes, but with the proper permit, we can sell C/B babies. Which is really great, as this keeps the native animals from being snatched up and sold on the open market. And here in KY, one can only have 5 of any native W/C snake. Any more than 5 and you are subject to getting hemmed up!! LOL

Brian

Wow, they really are different! It must be hard to figure out the Easterns, from the Reds, from the crosses in areas where they overlap! I don't think our laws are so distinct. I think they are more general. Like you can or you can't. There is no permit sytem that I am aware of in regards to breeding. I agree it's a good system. Although I have no way to prove my Easterns were Captive Bred and Captive Hatched. I got all 5 of them given to me from other people so I have no receipts or anything. I will save my receipt for the Black Rats just in case. Thanks for sharing the pics, those are really neat snakes!
