How to keep feeder fish

Dulsinaya Aug 12, 2005 01:08 PM

I just recently got a gorgeous Northern Water snake, and I also got myself some feeder fish. Two of the three died. I have fungal preventative in their tank so that I won't feed Jorge a sick fish, but still... Is there anything special I should do?

Also, his belly's been getting a lot less vividly red/orange. I'm thinking he's shedding since he's been soaking alot more... is this correct?

And for the record... Jorge's never musked on me or bitten. These people who say every single water snake is nuts haven't handled one.

I am not sure what the best way is. Did you set up an actual fish tank for the feeders, with a filter? What kind of fish are they? It's a shame if the feeders are sick and have to be medicated, I'd be nervous about medicating feeders because not sure what effect that would have on the snakes. Are there any other stores you can check out to see who has the healthiest feeders? If worst comes to worst then I'd just go more often and buy just what you will feed right away. I'm lucky with my Banded Water, she only eats mice, will not touch fish. She's very friendly, but I got her already tame. I think most people are referring to wild Waters when they say they are bitey and musky. I've heard that catching them can be a challenge. I've seen them while hiking but they were always way to quick for me so I never actually caught any in the wild to see their temperament.
