Question for those breeding in the wamer climates .....

toshamc Aug 12, 2005 03:20 PM

Do you still start cooling in October? If not when do you start - I remember a lot of people in CA and FL were mentioning their season was really off this year so I'm wondering how much of a difference it would make to start cooling later in the year. Lets face it here in OC we are going to the beach almost every Christmas day (LOL) not exactly cool weather until the first of the year! I was thinking about holding off cooling until December and then breed Jan-March. That way I could get my girls nice and fat. I'm not breeding a lot of snakes (7 couples) and I'll for the most part be using one male per female. Yes I know not the most lucrative strategy but this is more of a dinkin year for me.

Any suggestions positive or negative?

Thanks

I think CA is later on average due to the ambient temps not really going down until decish. last season my female layed in july, this year I had a female lay end of june and I should have another one lay any day. where as most peoples season are just about finished (including everything being hatched) I am just starting. Some of the snakes I bought here from other CA breeders were either september or november babies.

well i haven't bred many balls but this past season I had one female that was cooled in january, and bred at the end of march. she laid 6 good eggs that should hatch around the end of this month. A good friend of mine is still waiting on about 4 clutches of eggs to be laid as well. hope this helps. Josh Hutto

Tosha,

Here in central FL, it really doesn't cool until Jan. Then it's sporadic - 60s one day, 90s the next. I cooled all of mine using nature - for the last time - and my first clutch of the year hatched July 24. I have eggs laid since then and I still have eggs on the way. In fact, I'm expecting a clutch tonight (should have been last night). I think I might have another clutch due in 20 days and that should be the last of the season.

This coming season, I will start to artificially cool in Nov. I have a couple special ladies I want to get ready.

So are you about ready to breed that special female from a certain breeder?? Wink wink. She should be ready now or close.
