Australian Water Dragon setup questions

Skinkman62 Aug 12, 2005 03:30 PM

Hello!
I am new here and new to Australian WD. I will be receiving three babies, approximately 8" long, on tuesday.
I need help with setting up my cage.
I am starting with a 75 gal. for now and upgrading to a much larger cage soon.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
I have 10.0 UVB
And a basking light

I will be going to the pet store tomorrow to pick up the things I need for the setup.

What substrate do most folks use?
How deep should water be in the water container?
What type of hides are best to use?
What is good to use for the basking area?
What should humidity levels be?

I have read caresheets, but most don't really answer all the questions.

Any help is truly appreciated!

Thanks!

Don

Hi there,

I just got a trio of baby aussy waters as well. They are each about 8 inches long. I use cypress mulch for a substrate. For a water bowl I use a 10" long, 8" wide, and 4" tall tupperware container. As hides I have some cork bark set up for them to crawl under and a nice big peace of grapevine. The grapevine also acts as a basking spot for them. As far as humidity goes, they do not need nearly as much as Asian water dragons. I think the large water bowl supplies them with enough humidity and I also mist them slightly once every day or two. I hope this answers some of your questions.

Here is a pic of my setup. I have 2 AWDs in it that I've had for 9 months and they do great. It's 6x4x2 and has a 25 gallon aquarium built in for a swimming pool. (heavy duty filtration system of course)
