ONE TORTOISE OR TWO???

sallie_keeper Aug 12, 2005 04:51 PM

Hi all. I am hoping to pick up a red-foot tortoise at the Sept expo in Anaheim.. I was wondering if it is better for the tortoise to be a solitary animal or have a companion.. I more than likely will end up with a hatchling so I will not know sex. Can 2 males share enclosure after they reach adulthood?? I do not plan on breeding but it if happens it happens... so male/female would be ok.. I just want what is best for this tortoise.. That and I wouldnt mind more than one...lol

Any thoughts???

thanks,

Harpy

I think it is better to have two rather than just one. They seem to compete for food more which is good when they are little. When they get larger, they do spend a lot of time around each other too.
If you have two males that are raised together you shouldn't have any problems. In fact, I never had any problems with male to male aggression until I got two adult male cherryheads. They fought like crazy every time they saw each other. It was real fighting with bloody noses and bit faces after just a few minutes. Could never keep them together.
But with my Colombian redfoots, the males never, ever fought.
