There's probably one in there....it's just 30 feet down.

Before I saw my first confirmed indigo in the field last year, I saw a large black snake from a distance disappear down a gopher hole. I stuck my camera in the hole hoping my flash would catch a glimpse so I could make a positive ID (large racer or small indigo)

Sometimes those damn racers like to pretend they're an indigo at the entrance to a gopher tortoise burrow.
