Crested Gecko diet

Lizarddude720 Aug 12, 2005 06:18 PM

Hi

I have 2 female crested geckos who have just moved into a new 29g tank. While i was cleaning out their other tank i fouund 4 dead eggs. I dont know how they are doing it but i asked around some say mostly tropical and araborial reptiles lay infertile eggs all the time(water dragons do it, so i was told). Well thats not the problem, from laying eggs they have alost weight and i dont know a good way to gain back weight. So what do i feed them to gain back weight? And how do i get my geckos to try new foods like that trex stuff or baby food?

Thanks

Big P

Most female herps can develop an infertile clutch of eggs; it's a natural process. As far as weight gain, wax worms work very well for putting a few grams back on the animal. However, you definately do not want to make them a dietary staple. They're high in fat and low on nutrients, but when my beardie lays a clutch and is looking a little smallish, I'll usually let her "bulk up" on those - cautiously, and just as an additive to her normal diet, NOT her entire intake. Hope that helps.

Meant to tell you, as far as the baby food goes, just introduce it to the tank on a regular basis. I put a teaspoon-full of peach, mango, banana, etc. baby food in a small ceramic bowl and change it out every other day. My hatchlings don't touch it at first, but eventually come around.

To get them onto the complete meal powder like the T-Rex CGD, dust your crickets with it and they'll get used to the flavor. Then when you mix their CGD, they'll recognize it and eat it.
