I'd suggest padded shelf liner. I had my leo's on sand with a UTH and it wasn't creating enough heat plus sand gets annoying when they walk through their water dish and get sand stuck to them and in their water dish. I also hated having to change the sand every so often, with the padded shelf liner I just vaccuum up all the mess in the tank and when I feel that it needs to be cleaned I take it out clean it off and put it back in. Padded shelf liner is easy and it saves money since I don't have to buy more subtrate when I run low because I can clean what I have.
