Colors?

Jeff Clark Aug 12, 2005 08:31 PM

What color Bainbow Boas do you like?

RED ONES??? This one is a 4-year old Peruvian.

ORANGE ONES??? The larger one is a male Brazilian that was born here. The smaller opaque one was CB by the late Gary Walsh in 2002.

YELLOW ONES??? This female Brazilian was imported in 1992. Sorry but me and my camera just do not capture how yellow this snake really is.

I have a red one and I think he is the best looking one I have ever seen so I am going to have to go with the red. I can't wait till one day that someone finds an albino Brazilian.

Red all the way. I have two and one is quite red and the other is a very pretty reddish orange. I'm hoping they'll grow into being very distinctly different in colorations.

I am so glad you posted this thread. I'm a BP and GTP owner who has wanted a Rainbow for a long time, but it seems the more I try to research them online the more confused I get!

Red is my favorite, but I've seen so many varities in color I stand before you totally confused. I have no desire to breed, and I am trying to educate myself so if I order one I will wind up with the color I am so crazy about for a pet.

I know age has to factor in here, but can you tell me what else can affect 'how' red a...say...BRB can be? I've seen dark red (which is what I seek), dark reddish-brown, reddish-orange, washed out red, and one that I swear almost looked a purpley red.

Anyone have any links or books they can suggest? Thanks!

Morgana,
...It really is tough to tell how one is going to turn out. Some people say to look at the parents. In the PICs the PIC with the two orange ones the larger snake is about as bright as they come and that snake came from parents that were both very brown. If you pick out a baby that looks good it will probably turn out good. Most of them get plainer colored during the first year to 18 months and then improve after that. Some of the red babies keep getting darker as they mature and eventually turn out with too much dark pigment. I like bright standout looking crescents on the sides. Most babies with big pretty crescents keep them throughout their life. The purply red ones you saw may have been my Isla Marajo Rainbow Boas. I have PICs of them and many of the other subspecies on my website. The best way to get a collection of BRBs that have the colors you want is too buy lots of them and raise them up and when they are 18 to 24 months old sell the ones that are not what you like;o)

Thanks Jeff for that great answer. It clarifys a lot for me. I've been to your site, and I come away just wow'd. Do you ever sell holdbacks/yearlings? Up until now all I've had are two GTPs and one BP rescue, but I've had a big crush on BRBs for some time now.

My thoughts on the red vs. orange are still evolving. The first pair I bought are brownish-orange and after seeing more and more pics I liked the red better. I bought some that are more likely to become red. Then I bought an orange one and I swayed back to orange. My deal is that I like the brightly colored not diluted with brown colored ones best. There is such a vast difference in one to another that there are certain individuals who are outstanding to me. I can't say with I like like best, I can say that there are certain individuals of all the colors I truly adore. Pattern and contrast are what I currently seem to be attracted to the most.

By the way, I took the plunge and bought a female Hog baby that will be shipped after Daytona. I have wanted one for several years.....so I guess it was time. Now, of course I'll have to get a male. I suppose I have a year or two to find one.

I love the reds too. I'd pay double if I could find someone selling an older red just so I could assure I was getting the color I like the best. (I know that sounds idiotical...but I'm not into breeding and want what I want, lol)

My female is about to be shipped to Cathy M. (breeder in Ca.) to eventually be bred to her males. I'm not into breeding myself. I'm just at that juncture in my life (old as dirt) where I'm trying to lessen stress, lol. (Recently retired police dispatcher in much need of Zen *G*)

I wish I could find a local that wanted to breed a female to my male, Loki. The poor guy is a proven breeder who keeps making plugs for nothing. Man, he looks forlorn..misses the ladies! LOL! His pic is below, and by the way he is not that fat now...the person I bought him from overfed him...imho.

I bought them both for pets, and the BP is a recue my squad found. Once I get a BRB and maybe a Chameleon I think my zoo will feel complete.

Reds, huh? Yummy. I'm in the middle of selling in Florida to move to my land in Ga. Once I get settled I'm definitely looking to buy.

Very nice.....someday I will have a Chondro or 2 as a display. I suspected you weren't breeding, but it never hurts to wonder/dream. Maybe I'm foolish but I think someone will come along that is willing to trade with me. I am patient and if I'm willing to wait long enough something will materialize eventually. I just paid for a Hog and have been looking for at least 2 years. I am getting things ready for her now. I'll post pic to this inappropriate forum (for Hogs) after she settles in from shipping. The fellow I get some feeders from has been pushing GTP's on me for a while now, but I'm still dreaming.

Morgana Aug 21, 2005 04:04 AM

Hey..you never know? I don't know how long it will be until we have babies, but you might still be looking by then..and I love trading.

By the way...you said display? Chondros are pretty hinky about high traffic areas, and they stress easily.
