What morphs to get?

hmnclone Aug 12, 2005 11:33 PM

Hello all,

I am interested in getting into breeding hondurans, they have just completely captured my attention. (I have been breeding sinaloans and pythons for a while.)

What would be the morphs that you would suggest to start a breeding program? I am fairly literate in genetics so dont mind genotype suggestions.

Thanks for your help,
hmnclone

First off you should get what interests you, and not what other people say you should get: your the only one that knows what YOU like.

Second, with morphs ranging from $50 each to $3000 each, your wallet will have some say as well. I'd love to grab all the snows up that are showing up on the classifieds, and the hybinos as well, but just don't have the cash to do so.

Just get what intersts you and you'll be happy. I personally would like to have a pair of all of the Honduran morphs just for the diversity of color. Takes time and money, both in large amounts, but I'm happy so far and alway looking to pick up something new here and there. So far I've managed to obtain 1.1 tangerine albinos, 1.1 tri-color hypos, and 0.1 het hypo. I'm picking up a pair of 1.1 Anerys soon as well, just have to send the money and wait for a good time to ship weather permitting. I did have a nice male extreme hypo hatchling, but unfortunately he quit eating and eventually expired.

Another avenue would be double or triple hets, you would get a rainbow of babies from the breeding which would be pretty sweet as well.

You can get just about any of the morphs if you plan a long term strategy and do all the footwork that Terry, Shannon, Mike Falcon, and several others have done the past 10 years (sorry if I left you out, not on purpose). The recipe's are out there, you just have to have patience: You breed your anery to your hypo and then grow up the babies (2-3 years wait) and breed the babies to each other and whammo, you get a ghost or two.

Best of luck.

triple hets are great because they can produce all the morphs, single and double varieties. of course, an animal whose genotype is homozygous-het-het is even better, and double homozygous het is better still.

Phentoypically i'm still partial to the snow project animals: snows are dramatic and get even more so as they age, and the rest of the clutches, including albinos and anerys, are nice to see as well.

but it all comes down to personal preference, i suppose.

good luck, i'm sure you'll enjoy them.

peace
terry
