eatinmachine Aug 13, 2005 12:38 PM

I just purchased a red sided skink at my local reptile show and was wondering how do you keep yours. I am setting up a cage just want to know how you keep yours or how you suggest me to.

well ive never kept these but a friend of mine had some fo quite a while till he decided to sell them(a trio).trhey never bred but he never really cooled them down or cycled them either.he kept his trio in a twenty gallon tank and they wre very happy so a ten might be ok but if you have a twenty it would give it more room.the tank was a dry savanna setup with a sand/soil mix for a substrate.he had a 60 or 75 watt spotlamp over one side of the tank.also a water dish big enough to soak in was provided.they ate all the usual insects(crikets, mealworms, etc.) and occasionally ate some fruit and baby food.hope this helps and if you need anything else just ask

I will not mix species. I like mine so much already I wnat another. could I house two similarly sized of the same species together? Is there a chance that if I got a pair they would breed I have not read anything about any captive bred. Also I just purchased some REp-Cal phosphorous free calcium and vitamin d3 ultra fine for all reptiles and amphibian powder for dusting the crickets (and other insects with is it ok? I am also starting to gut load well more like keep the crix a live by feeding them a few different kinds of fish food (pond formula, reptomin turtle food, and regular gold fish food) and yellow squash as a water source and a water bowl with gel stuff in it, and I am also keeping them on potting soil. Will this help? has anyone ever heard of miner-all dust? I am open to suggestions.

make sure if you house 2 together you have 2 females or a pair as male skinks usually dont get along.if you are going to get 2 you need a twenty gallon tank probably.to breed them you will probably need to cool them similar to fire skinks as both species come from tropical west africa.if you need some info on doing this i can probably get some from a friend who has a trio.he is the same one who had the red sideds.hope this helps

Go to any fire skink care site and keep them same way except dryer . Two males will kill each other they will start to fight.
A pair will be ok but use a 20 long minimum again go to a good fire skink site and thats the same care.
They stay smaller than Fire skinks think max is around 8 inches. I looked into them and allmost got them when my area pet store got them.
They are neat active good looking skinks.

its really up to you.you can experiment with each over time and see wich you think is best after experimenting with them.just make sure it is something they can burrow in.i think aspen would work well, but its really up to you.
