Which type of incubater works well for BP eggs? ( 1 or 2 clutches)

JDalbo Aug 13, 2005 12:46 PM

I need help determining which type of incubater works well incubating BP eggs. I don't have alot of space for some of the larger ones I see people using and was wondering if the Hobavators work well? I only need one which is large enough for about 2 clutches. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Joe

Which is the most popular plastic box size -- 6Qt, 12Qt, other?

Thanks In Advance,
Chris

PS -- Sorry for piggybacking another question on your thread. I just figured that the size of plastic box used may also help dictate which size incubator would be most appropriate. Two birds. One stone.

Hey Chris, here's some pics for a sense of scale.
Those two boxes are 19 quart "deep" Rubbermaids.

yeah..they were huge! :P
When i probably could have gotten away with useing the same 4.5 quart sterilites i have in my hatchling rack.

Chuck - did you separate the eggs to put them in like that? I'm just wondering cause I had a variety of tubs ready for the hobavator (Just in case) but none of them would have fit my clutch if I'd have gone that way. She laid them in a 9" diameter circle and I would have had to try to pull them apart to get them into even a standard 12 or 16 quart tub. And with the one sitting on top it seems like it would have meant either cutting back on the substrate or having that on sitting up near the heating element? Next year I'm going to build a walk in incubator like on the Snakekeeper video LOL.

Good question tho Chris.

Thats a good point though, and kinda why i went with such large containers.I did expect to get a big lump of eggs.

Actually, neither of the two clutches i got this year were adhered together...maybe i had discovered them both quicker than i thought.

I am currently using a hovabator and it should be fine for you to use with 1-2 clutches (5-7 eggs per clutch). If you need something bigger I would suggest using the hovabator cover on a larger styrofoam box.

Hi Mohamed, congrats on the pied hatchlings. They are very nice!...but.If i were you,i would look around for a nice standup freezer(non-running/broken can be found for $20).The insulation in them really can't be beat.
Then add a heat source(heat tape/pad),nice proportional t-stat,and some computer fans, and it will increase your odds for 100% success rate.Without draining the pocket.Once i had one running i was amazed at the temp stability.
