Hey everyone,
Just ordered a baby, captive-bred Northern black racer from Glades herp. Racers were the first snakes that I had ever heard about as a child, so it is certainly a very nostalgic snake for me. My father grew up in a small rural Ohio town, where he snake hunted every day. He had found such wonders as the true blue racer and Northern black racer, in addition to many other Ohio snakes.
It was the descriptions of these beautifully patterned and somewhat vicious snakes that kept me searching to photograph one in the wild for over seven years. Still no luck. I am sure that seeing one in the wild is quite a thrill...
Still, I cannot believe that I am getting a black racer! Not exactly a snake that you see in every collection. Anyway, as for the setup, I am going pretty plain, as I have heard that this species in particular will destroy any natural setups within a matter of seconds. 20-gallon glass aquarium, newspaper substrate, heavy shallow water dish, weighted hidebox with some old shirts stuffed inside, sturdy branch, some nice rocks, and a basking lamp at one end. Sound good? Thanks!
