What's wrong with using calci-sand?

icemom Aug 14, 2005 11:17 AM

On warius websites people suggest not to use calci-sand, while pet stores pushing for it. I already bought mine, then read not to use it. I'm awaiting for my new baby, so it's a burning question for me. I realize that for the baby I should use lining, but what is the problem for an older dragon? It states to be fully digestible.
Appreciate you input on it.

From what I understand (and I could be wrong) calci-sand is designed to clump when wet to make it easier to clean up. If your dragon eats it, it could clump in his stomach and cause impaction. Regular play sand is not as risky, but still shouldnt be used for young dragons because their digestive systems are so small and delicate. I would say return the calci-sand if you can and rely on what people on these forums and other knowledgeable places tell you (not pet stores). Pet stores and their suppliers are trying to make money, even if it means making false claims to sell an overpriced product. Hope this helps! I'm sure other people will have more detailed info.

the only problem i see with it is that you can go to walmart and by a 40-50 lb bag of play sand for $2.50.......so if money is no issue to you, then you can use the "same exact stuff" but in a smaller plastic 1 lb bag with a picture of a lizard on it for 10 times the price and much less product.

i think the problem with calci-sand is the when they ingest it they can absorb too much calcium.

Because quite simply it's not digestible. It would be like a person eating glass. If you're lucky it might not kill you right away, but eventually it will. Calci-sand will clump up in a reptile's insides, and there it will stay, making it impossible to pass. How can they sell this? The reptile industry can make erroneous claims all they want to market and sell a product, it is not regulated at all.
I've been in a few good pet stores, mainly Mom & Pop type shops, but for the most part, they don't care about you, or your animal, all they care about is $$$$$$. Most of them don't know squat about the animals they are selling.
Take the calci-death back to the store and get your money refunded. Then use that money to buy non-stick shelf liner, reptile carpet, butcher's paper, or tile. Or, you can use newspaper or paper towels. These options are FAR safer, and will save you money and spare you misery, too.

Yehh, I see... BTW, they were also insisting that dragons are veeeery easy to care for, practically care-free animals.LOL. Ufortunately, I trushed the empty bags(all but one)from the sand. Well, thanks for the explanation, and I'll try to return it anyway.
