Is vinegar solution OK to clean and desinfect glass tank?

icemom Aug 14, 2005 09:16 PM

I was told that I can use 50:50 solution of vinegar and wather to clean and desinfect the tank. Figured I'll ask here. Basically I'm looking for effective yet unexpensive way to do it.
Does anyone using it or heard of it? I"ve read that oil based cleaners like pinesol, lisol are dangerous. What oter things are good to use?

Vinegar and water is good, only I don't think you need such a high concentration. I've read that 1:10 works fine.
I use an excellent product on my tanks called Healthy Habitat, made by a company called Natural Chemistry. It's fairly inexpensive and I'm pretty sure you can get it online @ thatpetplace.com.

You can use Nolvasan or KHR. The latter is much less expensive and fine for most keeper's use. They are both concecntrated so a little goes a long (make up by the gallon). I use the KHR and find it to be fine. I looked at prices and found Omaha Vaccine to be best (someone here suggested them). I got $5 off as a new customer, too.

If you use vinegar go with the 1:10 as suggested.

vinegar, to my knowledge is not a disinfectant. However as a glass cleaner it is great. Novasan diluted as recommended on the bottle is good as an disinfectant.

Healthy Habitat is a cleaner and deoderizer it doesnt kill germs & bactiria. i use it for spor cleaning and use diluted bleach for disinfecting when i clean the whole cage but i think im going to switch to nolvasan for disinfecting insteaded of the bleach, i dont have a great sense of smell and i think the rest of the household is tired of me dragging them to tanks and asking if thay smell like bleach after i've rinsed them
