Badly injured scutes!

pmac Jul 17, 2003 08:55 AM

Hi
My friend recently gave me a red belly he had found in the wild. It had the usual vegetation growing from its carapace of a wild turtle. After the first time I had seen it(in his hands) it looked fine, however, when it was handed in to me a week later he told me it had shell rot. The weird thing was the shell rot wasn't there when I seen it a week before, plus all the moss from its carapace was gone. I believe that he tried getting the moss off, in doing so off came some scutes. It looks pretty bad, so I was wondering if there was any special treatment for "ripped off" scutes?
Thank you
Mike

Poor turtle. (It probably was painful.) Can you post a pic? How far down did the removal take the scutes? I think I would take it to a vet or at least get some Novalsan to wash the area and let the shell air dry. I`d also keep the water really clean to prevent infection.
