Gecko hemipenile bulges difficulty

kelsman May 17, 2003 07:43 PM

Hey,
My male gecko just had his first little visit with a female, and courting and breeding went well for the most part, except for the fact that his weiner is still hanging out, it's been more than 24 hours, and i'm wondering what to do, I can't afford to take him to the vet? Any help is greatly appreaciated.

I had the same problem with my patternless male this season. I was able to gently place it back in the right spot with a damp Q-tip. However one of my customers didn't have such good luck with his patternless male. He spoke with his vet and he recommended that he put mineral oil on the hemipene to keep it moist and allow it to be withdrawn. Last time I checked in on him last week the mineral oil had worked and he was doing fine. Another thing you can try is a soak in a shallow (1 inch or less) dish of warm water. You may also want to put him on paper towel, if he isn't already, just to make sure that no substrate gets caked on.
hope this helps you out and good luck.

I have heard that if you soak them in a warm, shallow suger water solution it can help them retract the hemipenis.

Also, definitely use the mineral oil.

The most important thing here is that you DO NOT let it dry out.

Good luck.
