Some W. Hognose husbandry question.

Turtlequest Aug 15, 2005 10:34 PM

Hello,

My main question is on the temps. Its hard for me during the summer to keep steady temps in the tank. My heating pad heats much too hot. My parents put the Air Conditioner on and off through out the day, and the heatwaves of NJ make the heat flucuate. When i'm working, I really can't control the temps too well. But heres a breakdown.

Usually the tank is about 78-82 during the day, and 76 - 80 during the night. If I turn the heating pad on, The temp gets to about 90 (I think that might be too hot).

Are my temps OK? I just ordered a thermostat and some heat tape. I want the hogs temp to be about 85 during the day and 80 at night. Is that better?

Also, How safe is Flexwatt? I do not want to start a fire. Some people tell me its perfectly safe. It just looks so unsafe! Also, can i keep the flexwatt on 24/7? I want to heat my hogs all winter with it.

Thanks for any advice.

Let's look at what hognoses experience in the wild. For one, they certainly don't experience steady temps. Hogs are native to areas with the same temp swings you experience in NJ. So why the urge to maintain a steady temp? As long as it doesn't get too hot (>100F on hot side) or too cold (

Leo! I thought you had dropped off the face of the earth years ago! I'm not on the turtle forums anymore, so I am glad to see you around. We'll have to catch up sometime.

It has been a brutal summer in NJ and you certainly do not need a heat pad with those temps.
To hot can kill a snake to cool cant . I NEVER use the UTH during the summer early fall.
When the temps average low to mid 70s use your Uth but not now.
I like cobra heat pad so cant help you with flex watt. Cage forum which is great can help.
