Question about heat & humidity

assie2071 Aug 16, 2005 09:40 AM

Lately my ball python has been missing his mice 2-3 times in a row. I took him to the vet and he said that he could either be too cold or have low calcium. I decided to try and help him out with heat and humidity first. I got him a heat light and a thermometer and hygrometer. The vet told me to keep the temp between 80-90, but he didn'y say anything about humidity. I just wanted a second opinion and some advice about how humid to keep him.

You need to create a heat gradient so your ball can regulate its temperature. An ambient temp of 80F with a hot spot of 90F is good. A basking light or under tank heat pad can provide a good hot spot. As for humidity, in the 50-60% range should be OK, and you can bump that up when your ball goes into shed.

You mentioned that one can bump the humidity in a ball python's cage when the snake goes into shed. How does one do that? How much should the humidity by increased?

Thanks
