im curoius abou tall these new color morphs, and eye desingers...

herpsaremylife Aug 16, 2005 04:31 PM

does all the inbreeding it took to make them seem to have caused any deformities or retardations on the individuals? especially with this new "snake eye desinger" i had a large male leo a while back that had one eye recessed and all dark, and one eye had all bulgy and covered in white vaines and he seemed to be lethargec and mabe even retarted because he couldnt catch the crickets, he has to be hand fed to this day, and never puts on weight in his tail. is this "snake eye" actually just turning out to be some deformety witht h their eyes, and can they see/ function properly? it reminds me of german shepards, over on bred for their sloping back causing the majority to be lame int he hips, and leuicistic rat snakes with their buldgy eyes... there is a point where the animal they are producing are no longer happy, and will live with problems for the rest of their lives.

Most will agree that inbreeding does lead to issues. What those issues are and how they affect leopard geckos, on the other hand, is still pretty widely debated. There's been all sorts of deformities and issues this year, missing eyelids, kinked tails, babies hatched that aren't fully developed. Some of this is due to incubation, but I think a lot of it is due to inbreeding.

For example, tail kinks in LVPAs are generally considered to be caused by inbreeding, and there's been a lot of work done to try to outcross to avoid it from propgating further.

As for snake eyes specifically... it's not really anything new, and the leos appear to be able to see just fine. The snakes eyes are just now being marketed by Ron Tremper. I had one about 2 years ago and she was fine. Not to say that it's not a genetic defect, but if it is it doesn't seem to affect them much.

People may not realize it, but there is some realy benifit in importing a few animals each year to help outcross the genetics, even it means losing a little bit of color.
