it depends on the room temp, the ventilation and how far the basking spot is from the light. I would start with a 100W halogen spot. You can always use a higher wattage bulb on a dimmer switch to get it perfect.

Depends on a few factors, like your normal room temperature, how far it is mounted from the basking spot etc. Typically a 75w heats a 35 gal long tank nicely with basking temps of 100F or so. For a 55gal, try a 100 or 125 w bulb.
