How common are twins???????

Steve G Aug 16, 2005 09:12 PM

I wish I could show you two noses poking out of the same egg, but one was out and cruising, before any of the other eggs had even pipped.

Here's the story.........We are talking about a clutch of 20 deppei jani eggs. The neonate in the right of the pic was the first one out Sat. evening. The little one at the top of the pic was number 3 or 4 out and about, a day later. Yesterday, while doing a head count, as more and more hatched, I quickly noticed I was going to end up with one more hatchling than eggs. I strongly suspect that the little one at the top of the pic is the other twin. Note the little stump of a tail. The first one out appears perfect, just somewhat smaller than average. The hatchling in the left foreground is a sibling that I included just to show a size comparison. This is the first time that I have ever had a twin birth. Has anyone else out there popped out twins before? Just kind of curious................Steve G.

Congrats on last year's hatch. Were both of those hatchlings completely normal? I was wondering if twins share a common yolk sac, or if they are simply totally separate embryos that develop in a single egg. The two that I suspect are twins are certainly not identical, as their pattern varies. When they are all out, I will examine them all carefully to see if any two look identical..........Steve G.

Yes they were normal , but about half the size in comparison to the rest of the clutch though, but otherwise normal.
And they were definatley not "identical" twins.

Those are great looking snakes , nice colors allready .

I think twins are fairly common .

One set of twins with albino yellow ratsnakes and another set of red tegu twins. The yellow rats have thrown twins two years in a row.
Congrats on your jani twins. Even though twins are usually smaller at birth, they catch up quick and seem to grow to normal size in my limited experience.
