Hypocalcemia Question?

Gadzooks Aug 16, 2005 10:30 PM

I recently acquired some young leos that I believe suffer from hypocalcemia (distorted limbs, some lethargy but are still eating well) My question is that if I get them on the proper calcium routine is this condition reversible? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks is advance, Gadzooks

Metabolic Bone Disease (MDB)

If it hasn't set in terribly yet, progress can be made. You can't really fix any major damage that has been done but you can make a difference in the "floppy/bendy" bones that will be noticeable. It depends how bad it is to begin with and how old the leos are. Since they are young, I bet you can help a lot.

Perhaps obtain some liquid calcium to jump start the process and do leave a bowl of calcium in the cages with them for free access. Usually I'd say No to D3 supplements but dusting the food with a calcium/D3 supplement a few times a week could be beneficial.

it happened to me once and what i did was take some water, put some calcium powder in it and mix it up. I took an eye dropper and feed them with it. Get a little drop on the end without dripping it everywhere and put it on their nose, they will eventually realize what it is and start licking then you put the eye dropper there and let them drink, i did that probably less then a half dozen times and it fixed it right up

i must add, like the other person said it will fix the bendy limbs, they get strong pretty quick, however the limbs still had a little permenment bend in them. Although it didnt fix it 100% it still got teh limbs to the point where they could walk again and do not pose a problem to them.
