Deworming/parasitizing the entire colony??

melinda666 Aug 16, 2005 10:48 PM

Since parasites are such a big problem in Leo's. Seems it would be a good idea to do a preventitive deworming/parasitizing once or twice a year on everyone. Is this safe? Possible? advised?

I used to do it for my dogs, cats and horse. It seems a bit backwards to wait until the animal is showing signs of parasites before medicating.

Why isn't there some kind medicated food/pellet etc... that we can administer a few times a year to knock out any parasites that may be present? Kinda like heartworm pills for dogs.

Am I just a weirdo for asking??

It's generally considered not a good idea, simply because some leopard geckos are extremely sensitive to some of the meds. The one I'd even consider doing this with is parazap, but even then they're extremely sensitive to dosage.

Generally it's considered not worth the risk, but it has been done.

Thanks for the reply. I have been researching and have found a few breeders that do a regular deworming on their stock. I will look into it a bit more. I would also love to learn how to check fecal samples myself. Seems I am always taking someone to the vet. I'm going to look into getting the "understanding reptile parasites" book.

That is a very good book, i have it and have done a couple fecals myself. you should definently get that book, it explains all the drugs used to cure the parasites, the signs of parasites, tells you about the different kinds of parasites and how to treat it, and other stuff.
