Albino sensitive to light?

Carpet Aug 17, 2005 12:29 AM

So this past weekend i picked up a female tremper albino. I put her in my tank with my two other females (a patternless and hypo tang.) Both the patternless and hypo tang are pretty active during the day and night, but the albino barely ever comes out of the hide, only to eat or drink. Whenever she does come out of the hide and there is a light on she curls up in a ball and lays flat, plus doesnt seem to be able to see very well. So i was wondering being an albino if she was sensitive to light?

Has anyone else experienced this?

thanks.

Yes.

They hate it. In developing albinos, light can actually do a lot of irreversible damage to their eye sight. If you take them outside during the day (ie, for photos), most shut there eyes in natural daylight and get pretty pissed off. Camera flash does the same. It does depend on the breeding and the eye color of the albino (red/pink being more sensitive than others).

My "basic" Tremper seems to be my least sensitive albino (to light, that is)...he is very active during the day and often comes out to complain when I move his things during cleaning/feeding.

I'm surprised your patternless doesn't have a similar reaction to light.

Thanks.

Yeah my patternless doesnt have any problem with the light. She is pretty active during the day and night. During the day any time i walk into my room she comes out of her hide and sits at the front of the glass watching me.

Why didn't you quarantine them before you placed them in a tank with the 2 other geckos. It sounded to me like you got it from a pet store and their animals usually contain parasites.

Actually i bought her at a reptile show and took her to the vet the day after i got her to have her checked out.

I have to side with BlueLeo. Many parasitical infestations and systemic/bacterial illnesses remain undetected in a single vet check and/or couple of fecals. Unfortunately, quite a few breeders, even at reptile shows, have questionable colonies.

I'm all for 90 day quarantines over the 60 days. And VERY anti the "lets drop the temperature dramatically and see if the illness materializes" method of detection.

But anyways, that has nothing to do with the question you asked. Just wanted to comment.

I agree, depending on the source. When I buy from a reputable breeder or someone I know has a great reputation (for example I jut bought from Jodi Ahrens of groundgeckofreak.com), I usually only do about 60 days. Pet stores on the other hand... 90 without a question. Those places are just scary sometimes.

ME TOO!!! That has to be some of the worst advice I've ever heard. If there is a problem the gecko will be dead by the time you have any chance to fix it.
