When was the genus Morelia established, and what distinctive features found in its snakes required its establishment? I know that GTPs (now Morelia viridis) were formerly in the genus Chondropython; I have also seen older reference books refer to Boelen's pythons (Morelia boeleni) as Python boeleni. Were carpet pythons formerly members of another genus? Was Morelia preexisting and these snakes were recently added to it, or is it a recently established genus? Can anyone give me more info about this? I'm trying to learn biology and snake biology from the ground up - it's addictive!
