California Newt feeding

Jason W Jul 17, 2003 11:32 AM

A little over a month ago I colected a California Newt. I am told there are as manny as 5 stages of California Newts. Unfortunatly I dont know wich this is. My question is regarding feeding. I have kept blode worms available in a bowl for him per the pet store. I have observed him loos a slight bit of wieght but nothing big. However I have never yet observed it eating. I had 2 litters "about 50" new born guppys in the tak more for show than anything ells. To my surprize when I turned his light on thismorning all the babby guppys were gone. I searched the tank for dead fish but found none. All I saw was my newt looking at me with the licking of lips expresion. Do these Newts even eat fish? I did not think this was posable. I am begining to believe that the fish died and just got sucked up in the bio filter system but 50 all at the same time is pretty unvelievable. I have never lost that manny fish at once. Any help is greatly apresiated. Also if he indeed did eat them would it be wise to leave a breeder pair of guppys in the tank and let them to there thing to provide food for the newt? The tank is a 10G with half lant half water with only an undergravel filter for filtration. Once agan thank you and any help is greatly apreciated.

It's possible that the newt ate them. Fish aren't the most nutritious food for newts, though. You should try live maggots, waxworms, and chopped earthworm. Your newt may not even be eating the blood worms if they are frozen.

I dont think he is eating the blood worms. They eventualy just thaw out and dry up. I may just take him back to the creek were I found him and let him go. Seems that would be best at thsi point
